Friant Family Concert

7:00 PM
Suggested Donation $10.
The Barns at Rose Hill will present a homegrown group of artists, the Friant Family. Born and raised in Berryville, members of the family performing for this concert include John Friant and his sisters, Clissy Funkhouser, Mary Veilleux and Nina Geiger, and Nina's children, Grace, Caroline, Jack and Molly Geiger.

John Friant is a well-known local musician who sings and plays just about anything with strings: guitar, bass, fiddle, mandolin and hammer dulcimer. He plays bass and handles vocals for a number of local jazz groups in a variety of genres, including swing (Hot Club Millwood), classic (Shenandoah Sheiks) and progressive (GKTrio). John is also a multi-instrumentalist and vocalist for The Brogue Rogues, a traditional Celtic group and Rogues Gallery, a local old-timey/country band.

The Friant and Geiger women enhance family and church functions with songs made sweeter by their melodious harmonies. Nina sings and plays piano with the Shenandoah Sheiks, and performs with Clissy at the Rumsey Radio Hour in nearby Shepherdstown, WV. Clissy is a talented lyricist whose musical toasts and roasts have delighted and embarrassed friends and family alike for the last thirty years, and she is equally adept at political musical satire (listen to one of her recent political songs on YouTube, StopPATH). Mary is an excellent singer in her own right, who along with her brother John is a cantor at St. Bridget's Chapel and a member of its church choir. The Geiger children’s' vocal harmonies can perhaps be best described as angelic.

The Friant Family will be performing traditional (and some not-so-traditional) seasonal holiday music and other spirituals, interspersed with humorous parodies composed by Clissy over the years. Some special guest musicians have also been lined up for this show.

Suggested donation for the concert is $10. Revenue from this concert will help support The Barns' ongoing operating costs, with a portion of the proceeds to go to the Nancy L. Friant Scholarship Fund for the Performing Arts, an endowed scholarship fund administered by the Clarke County Education Foundation for deserving Clarke County High School students who have demonstrated aptitude in the fields of music, theater and dance.

July 18, 2011 - A LETTER

Hello, Susan and friends:

Out of the crush and excitement of Friday's inaugural concert, I want to congratulate you all again on creating such a welcoming and useful space at the Barns. We were all really stunned at the care and thought that has gone into the project. You have created a very comfortable and accessible space that I expect to become a place to reinforce and build a sense of community that is stronger and more open using the common ground of the arts which all human beings share.

I've been a touring professional working in community-based arts centers and programs for more than 25 years and I've seen a lot of works-in-progress (and a lot of building failures). So often, all the resources are focused on the building and the programming is ignored. You all seem to have been firmly committed to creating spaces to serve and to be used.

I look forward to watching your efforts bear fruit in the community there and to working with you in the future.

My best wishes, and more, congratulations. I know how hard won a victory like this can be. You won't get much rest, but I hope you'll get to celebrate like crazy in September!

Fond regards,

Scott Ainslie

It's been said that Madeline MacNeil's audiences hold their collective breath as the last notes of her songs drift into the tableau of stages large and small. Since 1972, when she began performing in Virginia's Shenandoah National Park, Madeline's goal has always been to bring listeners into the song. Her interest in stories first brought the mountain and hammered dulcimers to her attention, for they are part of this country's musical history and the heritage of other countries before they arrived here. This is part of Madeline's treasure as a performer: she sings and tells the stories with her beautiful voice and exceptional dulcimer skills.

Her recording career began in 1983 and now includes more than a dozen independent releases, including tributes to her heritage on Songs Of Earth and Sea and her love of jazz on As Time Goes By. Heart's Ease (classical and Celtic music featuring the hammered dulcimer) won an Indie for string music from NAIRD while Christmas Comes Anew was a finalist for this coveted award. Her recording of "Shenandoah" has been used extensively in Public Television productions as well as part of the Apple Tour in the Winchester, Virginia area.

REVIEW:  A ghoulishly good time was had by all at the Barns of Rose Hill Fourth Annual Haunting Halloween Dance on October 30. Music by the band, Olds-Kool - Classic Rock & Blues had folks dancing all night long. The costumes were amazing & very creative from the glamorous to the very scary – many witches – from ugly to beautiful, several cowboys, beauty queens, cartoon characters, movie characters, etc. It was a very successful evening for the Barns, netting about $2,300. Many thanks to the committee including Barbara Batterton, Wendy Clatterbuck, Paula Hite Le Duigou, Joanna Levi, Candy Means, Alex & Stephanie McKay, Ross Mulry, Caroline Roberts, Linda Roberts, Sue Ross & Carol Sullivan for all their assistance with set up & providing the tasty refreshments. The bartending team of Frank Lee & Stan Kerns did a magnificent job, and a special thanks to Eddie Leake for all of his help.

Several folks were honored including The 3 Blind Mice and the Butcher’s Wife, Tippy Hedren from “The Birds”, and Mrs. Roy Batterton for being a real trooper.

The Barns of Rose Hill & The Roots of American Music present Folk Music Revival of the 1950’s & 1960’s with William and Mary

7:30 PM Grace Episcopal Church Chapel, 110 North Church Street, Berryville. Admission: $10 at the door.

William (Bill Johnston) and Mary (Mary Knupp) explore the impact of major performers of the folk revival in helping preserve much of our rich musical heritage by making it palatable to the modern ear.  The program shows the foundations laid by Pete Seeger and Woodie Guthrie and their influence on the major performers of the folk boom in the late 50’s and 60’s, including the Kingston Trio, Joan Baez, Peter, Paul, and Mary, and Odetta.  Two themes in the program are the rise of the "singer-songwriter" and the notion of a "folk sound." The program also serves to demonstrate the role of folk music in the Civil Rights Movement.  The program contains a timeline of the events of the period.

Saturday October 16REVIEW: The Barns of Rose Hill & The Roots of American Music presented a Folk Music Revival of the 1950’s & 1960’s with William and Mary at the Grace Episcopal Church Chapel in Berryville in a “coffee house atmosphere”, also sponsored by Bob and Nina Randolph. William (Bill Johnston) and Mary (Mary Knupp) explored the impact of major performers of the folk revival in helping preserve much of our rich musical heritage by making it palatable to the modern ear.  Bill explained the foundations laid by Pete Seeger and Woodie Guthrie and their influence on the major performers of the folk boom in the late 50’s and 60’s, including the Kingston Trio; Joan Baez; Peter, Paul, and Mary; and Odetta.  Two themes in the program were the rise of the "singer-songwriter" and the notion of a "folk sound." The program also demonstrated the role of folk music in the Civil Rights Movement and contained a timeline of the events of the period. Throughout the evening the audience also participated in singing along as most everyone was very familiar with the songs. William and Mary received a standing ovation from the enthusiastic audience.

Special thanks to the following volunteers, Fabrice and Paula LeDuigou, Jean King, Lynn Welch, and the sound masters – Mike and Sandy Masquith.

FILM & FILMMAKERS FOCUS ON HISTORY & RACE IN “MOVING MIDWAY”

January 24, 5PM, Powhatan Auditorium in Boyce
(Most of the following was written by Ellen Maguire and appeared in the Washington Post on March 3, 2009.)

Godfrey Cheshire, a Manhattan film-critic-turned-director, and Robert Hinton, a professor of Africana studies at New York University, will be in Boyce on Sunday, January 24, to present and discuss “Moving Midway”, a documentary by Cheshire and Hinton which played at the New Directors/New Films festival in New York last year. The film, discussion and wine reception get underway at 5PM at Powhatan School auditorium. The event is free to the public.

This Martin Luther King Day event marks the third Barns of Rose Hill and Josephine School Museum collaboration. The documentary focuses on Midway, a one-time North Carolina tobacco plantation’s Greek revival-style house, built in 1848 on land that has remained in one family since 1739. The plantation house was being relocated a few miles to escape the encroachment of interstates and superstores. Cheshire, whose ancestor owned Midway, was filming the journey, with the added ambition of mapping the complex cultural legacies of Southern plantation life.

In a coincidence that Cheshire calls “miraculous”, he spotted a letter by Hinton in the New York Times Book Review. Cheshire knew the surname—it was the same as Midway’s original owner, one of Cheshire’s forebears. A phone call revealed their shared heritage. Both men had grown up in Raleigh, North Carolina, and both trace their ancestry to Midway. Cheshire’s great-great grandfather owned Dr. Hinton’s grandfather, a slave.

Cheshire and Hinton began an intense conversation about history and race. Hinton, who has a doctorate in history from Yale, joined the documentary’s team off-screen as an associate producer and historian. Archival footage and interviews trace the evolution of the Southern plantation from its birth as a cornerstone of the Southern economy into a celluloid icon.

Sponsorships for this event are invited and would be welcome. Contact the Barns at 955-7093.

REVIEW of Barns of Rose Hill Concert - Two By Candlelight

The Barns of Rose Hill celebrated the holiday season by offering its first annual Christmas Concert, Two by Candlelight featuring Duo Caluda, on Sunday December 6th.  Elizabeth and Glenn Caluda generously performed  their musical selections reflecting the winterscape and Yule season as a benefit for The Barns.

An attentive audience of over 60 people filled The Chapel at Grace Episcopal Church in Berryville and embraced  Elizabeth and Glenn Caluda’s charm and style reflected in their introductions and interpretations of the music presented for the evening.  Elizabeth Caluda played compositions by various composers capturing the beauty and solemnity of winter, one aptly titled Footsteps in the Snow.  Glenn Caluda offered a historical perspective on the guitar as he gave masterful performances on reproductions of period guitars.

Five Variations on “Greensleeves” and the Caluda’s closing Flamenco piece, Introduction and Fandango, featuring Glenn Caluda, brought the audience to a standing ovation

The Chapel, elegantly decorated with seasonal greens accented by glowing candles, enhanced the interplay of the two instruments.  Guests enjoyed an abundant reception table with wassail, wine and light fare.

The concert, presented by The Barns of Rose Hill, concluded a weekend of holiday festivities in Berryville:  the annual Christmas Parade sponsored by the Clarke County Ruritans and Berryville Main Street’s Annual Christmas Tree Lighting.

A Haunting Halloween Dance
to benefit The Barns of Rose Hill and the Blue Ridge Wildlife Center

On Saturday October 31st at 7:30 PM, Millwood Country Club will be transformed into a haunted house for The Barns of Rose Hill annual Halloween dance.  Great music will be by the talented Kendra and the Kingpins of Charlottesville.  This year, in the spirit of community, The Barns has invited another local non-profit, The Blue Ridge Wildlife Center, to co-host the party.  Subscription is $50.00 per person in advance; $60.00 at the door and includes snacks and sweets along with an open bar.

Our costume contest, with Wicked and Most Wicked winners, is always highly competitive.  Ribbons will be awarded for imagination and complexity as well as the scariest. Other categories will be decided on the spot.  Last year, for instance, because of the large number of look-alikes, a ribbon was given to the best Sarah Palin. If you are not inspired to dress up ahead of time, there will be a grab-bag selection of masks and accessories at the door.  Or you can come as yourself and dance for two good causes!

"World Class Blues - Boyce, VA"

On Saturday July 19th the award-winning Blues team of Paul Rishell and Annie Raines will present “The Long Road Home”, a program of regional blues styles including the Mississippi Delta, the Piedmont Triangle, and others.

“Listen to the simmering joy these two bring to the blues and you can almost see the mystical line that separates the timeless from the merely old. They clearly adore the vintage charms of early blues masters like Charley Patton, Ma Rainey, and Blind Lemon Jefferson, but there is nothing archival about the sweet muscle and urban sass they bring to their arrangements. Rishell is a wonderfully convincing singer - and such a hot guitarist that he taught both Susan Tedeschi and Michael Tarbox. Raines plays the harmonica like she was born with one in her mouth. On their undulating whoop of a new album, "Goin' Home," they wear classic blues tunes like a second skin, and their own songs feel right at home beside them.” Boston Globe, October 4, 2007.

The program, sponsored by the Roots of American Music Series as a benefit for the Barns of Rose Hill, will take place on Saturday July 19 at 7:30 PM in the Powhatan School Auditorium, Boyce, Va. Admission is $20.00. For reservations, more information, or directions please call: 540-955-4001.

Refreshments and registration begin at 8:30 a.m. The program begins at 9 a.m. and concludes by noon . Cost is $25, which includes all program materials and a copy of the speaker's book on end-of-life care. The agenda will also include a brief presentation by Blue Ridge Hospice on the value of music and pet therapy in patient care.

A resident of the Middleburg area, Betsy Murphy has worked in hospice care for 23 years in the Washington metropolitan area. Trained as a family nurse practitioner and certified as a hospice and palliative care nurse, she found the field of hospice work of great interest and has devoted her career to improving end-of-life care for patients and their families. In recent years, Murphy's focus shifted from hands-on nursing to an educator's role, teaching nurses, social workers, and the general public, to more effectively work with patients.

Widely published in nursing journals and a frequent speaker on hospice care, Murphy was prompted to write her own book, Guide to Caregiving in the Final Months of Life, after watching caregivers struggle to understand how to serve as an advocate for their loved ones.

In 1993, Murphy was honored as an Outstanding Woman in Medicine by the Loudoun Board of Supervisors. She was again recognized in 1997 and 2003 as an Outstanding Woman of Loudoun.

"Wit, Will and Walls:
The Betty Kilby Fisher Story"

For More Information:  click here

The Barns of Rose Hill to Host Public Screenings of Documentary on Desegregation in the Shenandoah Valley

The mission of the Barns of Rose Hill is to create a community and cultural arts center in Clarke County.   They are well on their way to breaking ground to restore the barns in downtown Berryville, but they continue their dedication of service to our citizens even before they have a roof over their heads!  Just such an event will be offered to the public, free of charge, in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King's birthday, "Wit, Will and Walls: The Betty Kilby Fisher Story", a short documentary film produced by Shenandoah University Television, will be shown at The Josephine School Museum, 303 Josephine St. Berryville, Va. on Monday January 21st at 7:00 PM.

In addition to the showing at The Josephine School Museum, the films will also be shown on Thursday January 24th at Johnson Williams Middle School, and at the Clarke County High School for Clark Hansbarger's Cultural Diversity class and club.  Due to limited space, only the screening at 10:00 AM at the middle school will be open to the public. Please contact the Johnson Williams Middle School at 540-955-6160 for details.

The film was produced by filmmaker Paulette Moore of Berryville with a grant from the Virginia Foundation for the Humanities.

The documentary, featuring scholars from across the country, including Dr. Warren Hofstra, Stewart Bell Professor of History at Shenandoah University, examines the life of Shenandoah University alumna Betty Kilby Fisher, who was just 13 years old when she was a plaintiff in a 1958 case to desegregate Warren County (Va.) Schools.  The activism that her family embraced and the subsequent violence they endured for their beliefs shaped Kilby Fisher's life and the lives of those around her. Ray Crawford, a local poet and doctoral candidate in political science at Howard University, performs original, poignant poetry throughout the film.

A companion film called "In My Grandmother's Footsteps" will also be presented at each of the screening events. Produced by Shenandoah University student filmmakers, Kevin and Nick Matheson and Cody and Hallie Penwell, the work features 16-year-old Tanesia Fisher, Kilby Fisher’s granddaughter who portrays her grandmother in dramatic scenes in “Wit, Will and Walls.”

Betty Kilby Fisher, filmmaker Paulette Moore and SU student filmmakers will be at each location for the film and discussion.

“These films present an opportunity to honor the spirit of Dr. King by helping to facilitate public reflection on the issues of race and class that still divide our communities,” Moore said.

For more information on the screenings please contact Janet Eltinge at 540-837-9969.

Hank Dunn's Hard Choices for Loving People has more than two million copies in print and is being used nationwide in hospitals, hospice communities, and nursing homes. Dunn's second booklet, Light in the Shadows: Meditations while Living with a Life-Threatening Illness, is now in its second edition.
