"World Class Blues - Boyce, VA"

On Saturday July 19th the award-winning Blues team of Paul Rishell and Annie Raines will present “The Long Road Home”, a program of regional blues styles including the Mississippi Delta, the Piedmont Triangle, and others.

“Listen to the simmering joy these two bring to the blues and you can almost see the mystical line that separates the timeless from the merely old. They clearly adore the vintage charms of early blues masters like Charley Patton, Ma Rainey, and Blind Lemon Jefferson, but there is nothing archival about the sweet muscle and urban sass they bring to their arrangements. Rishell is a wonderfully convincing singer - and such a hot guitarist that he taught both Susan Tedeschi and Michael Tarbox. Raines plays the harmonica like she was born with one in her mouth. On their undulating whoop of a new album, "Goin' Home," they wear classic blues tunes like a second skin, and their own songs feel right at home beside them.” Boston Globe, October 4, 2007.

The program, sponsored by the Roots of American Music Series as a benefit for the Barns of Rose Hill, will take place on Saturday July 19 at 7:30 PM in the Powhatan School Auditorium, Boyce, Va. Admission is $20.00. For reservations, more information, or directions please call: 540-955-4001.

The Roots of American Music Series is sponsored by Berryville Main Street, with funding assistance provided by Marion Park Lewis Foundation- Virginia Foundation for the Humanities - National Endowment for the Arts.

Proceeds will go to “raise the barns” & restore two dairy barns in downtown Berryville as a community & cultural arts center.

The Barns of Rose Hill and Blue Ridge Hospice Community Program:
"Intimate Journeys – Guide to Care Giving in the Final Months of Life
"

Hospice educator, author and speaker, Betsy Murphy, FNP, CHPN, will be the presenter for a half-day program on end-of-life care on Friday, June 6, at Grace Episcopal Church in Berryville. The event will focus on caring for individuals in the final months of life from the perspective of the caregiver. The program will be of interest to the general public, clergy, as well as healthcare and health-related professionals.

Sponsored by The Barns of Rose Hill and Blue Ridge Hospice, the event represents a collaborative effort between the two organizations to benefit the community. A variety of sponsorships are available for individuals and businesses wishing to support the program. Contact Diana Kincannon at 540-955-7093 for additional information. Continuing Education Units (CEUs) will be offered for healthcare professionals.
Lending support to help underwrite the program to date are: Hazen Wilson/J. Douglas Moler Insurance Agency, Roseville Veterinary Clinic, Annandale Millwork, Veramar Vineyards, Carter +Burton Architecture, Diamond Auto Spa, Shenandoah Sand, Omega Drywall, Ltd., and Foreman Builders.

Refreshments and registration begin at 8:30 a.m. The program begins at 9 a.m. and concludes by noon . Cost is $25, which includes all program materials and a copy of the speaker's book on end-of-life care. The agenda will also include a brief presentation by Blue Ridge Hospice on the value of music and pet therapy in patient care.

A resident of the Middleburg area, Betsy Murphy has worked in hospice care for 23 years in the Washington metropolitan area. Trained as a family nurse practitioner and certified as a hospice and palliative care nurse, she found the field of hospice work of great interest and has devoted her career to improving end-of-life care for patients and their families. In recent years, Murphy's focus shifted from hands-on nursing to an educator's role, teaching nurses, social workers, and the general public, to more effectively work with patients.

Widely published in nursing journals and a frequent speaker on hospice care, Murphy was prompted to write her own book, Guide to Caregiving in the Final Months of Life, after watching caregivers struggle to understand how to serve as an advocate for their loved ones.

In 1993, Murphy was honored as an Outstanding Woman in Medicine by the Loudoun Board of Supervisors. She was again recognized in 1997 and 2003 as an Outstanding Woman of Loudoun.

"Wit, Will and Walls:
The Betty Kilby Fisher Story"

For More Information:  click here

The Barns of Rose Hill to Host Public Screenings of Documentary on Desegregation in the Shenandoah Valley

The mission of the Barns of Rose Hill is to create a community and cultural arts center in Clarke County.   They are well on their way to breaking ground to restore the barns in downtown Berryville, but they continue their dedication of service to our citizens even before they have a roof over their heads!  Just such an event will be offered to the public, free of charge, in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King's birthday, "Wit, Will and Walls: The Betty Kilby Fisher Story", a short documentary film produced by Shenandoah University Television, will be shown at The Josephine School Museum, 303 Josephine St. Berryville, Va. on Monday January 21st at 7:00 PM.

In addition to the showing at The Josephine School Museum, the films will also be shown on Thursday January 24th at Johnson Williams Middle School, and at the Clarke County High School for Clark Hansbarger's Cultural Diversity class and club.  Due to limited space, only the screening at 10:00 AM at the middle school will be open to the public. Please contact the Johnson Williams Middle School at 540-955-6160 for details.

The film was produced by filmmaker Paulette Moore of Berryville with a grant from the Virginia Foundation for the Humanities.

The documentary, featuring scholars from across the country, including Dr. Warren Hofstra, Stewart Bell Professor of History at Shenandoah University, examines the life of Shenandoah University alumna Betty Kilby Fisher, who was just 13 years old when she was a plaintiff in a 1958 case to desegregate Warren County (Va.) Schools.  The activism that her family embraced and the subsequent violence they endured for their beliefs shaped Kilby Fisher's life and the lives of those around her. Ray Crawford, a local poet and doctoral candidate in political science at Howard University, performs original, poignant poetry throughout the film.

A companion film called "In My Grandmother's Footsteps" will also be presented at each of the screening events. Produced by Shenandoah University student filmmakers, Kevin and Nick Matheson and Cody and Hallie Penwell, the work features 16-year-old Tanesia Fisher, Kilby Fisher’s granddaughter who portrays her grandmother in dramatic scenes in “Wit, Will and Walls.”

Betty Kilby Fisher, filmmaker Paulette Moore and SU student filmmakers will be at each location for the film and discussion.

“These films present an opportunity to honor the spirit of Dr. King by helping to facilitate public reflection on the issues of race and class that still divide our communities,” Moore said.

For more information on the screenings please contact Janet Eltinge at 540-837-9969.
