The Barns of Rose Hill & The Roots of American Music present Folk Music Revival of the 1950’s & 1960’s with William and Mary 7:30 PM Grace Episcopal Church Chapel, 110 North Church Street, Berryville. Admission: $10 at the door. William (Bill Johnston) and Mary (Mary Knupp) explore the impact of major performers of the folk revival in helping preserve much of our rich musical heritage by making it palatable to the modern ear. The program shows the foundations laid by Pete Seeger and Woodie Guthrie and their influence on the major performers of the folk boom in the late 50’s and 60’s, including the Kingston Trio, Joan Baez, Peter, Paul, and Mary, and Odetta. Two themes in the program are the rise of the "singer-songwriter" and the notion of a "folk sound." The program also serves to demonstrate the role of folk music in the Civil Rights Movement. The program contains a timeline of the events of the period. |

REVIEW of Barns of Rose
Hill Concert - Two By Candlelight The
Barns of Rose Hill celebrated the holiday season by offering its first
annual Christmas Concert, Two by Candlelight featuring Duo Caluda, on
Sunday December 6th. Elizabeth and Glenn Caluda generously
performed their musical selections reflecting the winterscape and Yule
season as a benefit for The Barns. An attentive audience of over 60 people filled The Chapel at Grace Episcopal Church in Berryville and embraced Elizabeth and Glenn Caluda’s charm and style reflected in their introductions and interpretations of the music presented for the evening. Elizabeth Caluda played compositions by various composers capturing the beauty and solemnity of winter, one aptly titled Footsteps in the Snow. Glenn Caluda offered a historical perspective on the guitar as he gave masterful performances on reproductions of period guitars. Five Variations on “Greensleeves” and the Caluda’s closing Flamenco piece, Introduction and Fandango, featuring Glenn Caluda, brought the audience to a standing ovation The Chapel, elegantly decorated with seasonal greens accented by glowing candles, enhanced the interplay of the two instruments. Guests enjoyed an abundant reception table with wassail, wine and light fare. The concert, presented by The Barns of Rose Hill, concluded a weekend of holiday festivities in Berryville: the annual Christmas Parade sponsored by the Clarke County Ruritans and Berryville Main Street’s Annual Christmas Tree Lighting. |

Duo Caluda to Perform in Berryville On Saturday
evening, November 1, Drs. Elizabeth and Glenn Caluda will offer a
program of beautiful music featuring compositions for piano and
guitar at Grace Episcopal Chapel on North Church Street in
Berryville. The Chapel’s size and acoustics for such a program are
excellent, and the evening will also offer a wine reception. The
program is sponsored by The Barns of Rose Hill and is made possible
by a grant from the Marion Park Lewis Foundation. Elizabeth
and Glenn Caluda are both on the faculty of the Shenandoah
Conservatory of Shenandoah University in Winchester. Glenn joined
the faculty in 1975 and Elizabeth in 1978. They perform together as
Duo Caluda and have been featured on concert series at Loyola
University in Baltimore, Rowan University in New Jersey, and the
Philadelphia Guitar Society. Their
repertoire spans over 200 years of music, from the baroque to the
twentieth century, including pieces composed especially for them.
They will comment about the composers, the historic period
represented, the style of the works, performance practices, and the
history and development of the piano and the guitar. Glenn will
demonstrate the evolution of the guitar by playing on a variety of
period instruments. Admission is
$10 for adults, $5 for students and senior citizens. The program
will begin at 7:30 PM. For more information, call The Barns of Rose
