Textile Dyeing with Plants

  • Barns of Rose Hill 95 Chalmers Court Berryville, VA (map)

About the Class: In this workshop, you will explore the art and science of dyeing textiles with natural plant colors through a combination of demonstrations and hands-on projects. Follow along as the instructor demonstrates how to extract colors from plants and apply them effectively to mordanted natural fibers such as cotton and silk.

A special feature of the class will be learning how to set up, maintain, and dye from a classic indigo vat. You’ll also experiment with resist-dyeing techniques—including shaped resists such as shibori and tie-dye, as well as paste resists like clay—to create distinctive patterns on fabric. We will also explore discharge methods that remove color to produce unique design effects.

You will also receive a brief introduction to the cyanotype process, where rich Prussian blue pigment forms on cotton fibers when UV light transforms light-sensitive iron salts—an early precursor to photographic processes.

By the end of the workshop, you’ll have hands-on experience and foundational knowledge to continue exploring natural dyeing at home, creating your own vibrant, plant-based textile projects.

This workshop is limited to a maximum of 12 participants. All materials will be provided. Please wear clothing you don’t mind getting stained, and bring an apron if you have one.

About the Instructor: Wendell Combest, Ph.D., has taught hands-on workshops on the formulation of botanical medicines from plants at Shenandoah University School of Pharmacy and summers at the University of Vermont. Following his retirement, he has re-focused his interests to understanding how the vibrant colors found in plants can be extracted and used as natural dyes on textiles. He has studied natural dyeing in various workshops at the Maiwa School of Textiles in Vancouver, BC, and Botanical Colors in Seattle, WA.

Date & Time: Saturday, May 23, 2026. Class will begin at 10:00 AM and conclude by 4:00 PM, with a break for lunch—pack or support a local restaurant.

Class Fee: $24 per person, includes materials.
