About the Program: Join us for the opening of J. Foster Historic Signs, an exhibit of hand-crafted signboards inspired by the taverns, inns, and public houses of early America. The artist, Jackson Foster, will lead us in a presentation, Early American Taverns & Their Signs, exploring the history, symbolism, and craftsmanship behind the painted and carved signboards that once lined colonial roads and village streets.
Drawing on years of research into historic artisans, typography, woodworking, and painting practices, Foster offers insight into the role these signs played in everyday life and the traditional techniques used to recreate them today.
A painter and maker working in the tradition of 18th- and 19th-century sign artisans, Foster creates authentic interpretations using reclaimed wood, period-style hardware, and hand-lettered finishes. His work reflects a deep appreciation for the craftsmanship, history, and storytelling embedded in these distinctive objects.
Visitors may come and go as time allows. Complimentary refreshments will be provided.
Date & Time: Saturday, June 6, 2026. The reception will begin at 1:30, with the talk beginning at 2:00 and concluding by 3:00 PM.
