About: In honor of Black History Month, we welcome acclaimed performing artist and storyteller Tammy Denease for An Untold Love Story: The Life of Joan Jackson. Born into slavery, Joan Jackson was eventually granted her freedom—only to be kidnapped and unjustly forced back into enslavement. Through powerful storytelling, this moving program traces Joan’s life and legacy, exploring themes of love, family, resilience, and hope. Tammy Denease brings voice and presence to the story of a remarkable woman whose life has too often remained hidden from history.
About Tammy: Tammy Denease is an accomplished performing artist and storyteller whose work brings overlooked figures from American history vividly to life. Born in Columbus, Mississippi, she comes from a long lineage of gifted storytellers, including her great-grandmother, who was formerly enslaved. Tammy is a museum educator and historical tour guide, specializing in programs on Colonial history, slavery, health and medicine, and Native American history. Her performances are widely recognized for their depth, historical grounding, and emotional resonance—particularly her portrayals of important yet often “hidden” women in history.
