This VA250 program is part of our Roots of a Nation Series, made possible in part by a grant from Virginia Humanities!
About: Grammy-winning American Roots artists Cathy Fink and Marcy Marxer join Chinese hammered dulcimer virtuoso Chao Tian in a show that travels from China to Appalachia and beyond. Featuring yangqin (Chinese hammered dulcimer), gourd banjo, five-string banjo, ukulele, guitars, dumbek, cello-banjo, and mandolin, the trio blends traditional Chinese and Appalachian music with global folk influences.
Their inventive arrangements breathe new life into familiar tunes, from a Russian folk song turned jazz manouche to the Chinese lullaby “Nani Wan,” while Chao adds her own love of American old-time music. Born from friendship and shared musical curiosity, From China to Appalachia celebrates the universal power of music to connect cultures.
