Critton Hollow String Band

  • Barns of Rose Hill 95 Chalmers Court Berryville, VA, 22611 United States (map)

About: Since 1975, the Critton Hollow String Band has been bringing traditional American music to audiences across the globe. Now celebrating their 50th year, this beloved trio continues to enchant listeners with a blend of Appalachian fiddle tunes, early American ballads, and contemporary folk songs—delivered with warmth, precision, and joy.

Featuring Joe Herrmann, Sam Herrmann, and Joe Fallon, the band’s signature sound combines fiddle, hammer dulcimer, banjo, and guitar with rich three-part harmonies and melodic interplay. Their performances invite connection, drawing listeners into a shared musical experience. As Mitch Podolak of the Winnipeg Folk Festival once noted, they have a “unique ability to make their audience feel a part of their performance.”

Over the decades, the Critton Hollow String Band has graced stages from the Kennedy Center to the Birchmere and made appearances on Mountain Stage, The Today Show, and other national broadcasts. Their seven albums, including Gather ’round and Poor Boy, stand as a testament to their dedication to the enduring spirit of American folk music.
