Hatha for Strength and Balance

  • Barns of Rose Hill 95 Chalmers Court Berryville, VA (map)

About: This Hatha Strength and Balance class is designed for dedicated practitioners ready to deepen their practice through intentional challenge and refined awareness. Rooted in traditional Hatha yoga principles, this intermediate to advanced class blends steady breathwork with strong, deliberate movement to build muscular endurance, joint stability, and full-body integration. Expect longer holds, controlled transitions, and intelligent sequencing that invite you to cultivate both power and precision.

We will explore dynamic standing sequences, advanced balance postures, and strength-focused variations of foundational asanas. Core-intensive flows, hip and shoulder stability work, and arm balances with safe modifications are thoughtfully woven throughout, offering opportunities to refine alignment and expand your edge. Emphasis is placed on mindful engagement—learning not just to move, but to move with clarity, control, and embodied strength.

The practice culminates in grounding floor work and a deeply restorative savasana, allowing the nervous system to recalibrate and integrate the work of the body. This class is ideal for students with a consistent yoga practice who are comfortable bearing weight on hands and knees, exploring inversions, and sustaining focused effort. Come prepared to sweat, steady your breath, and discover new dimensions of balance—both on and off the mat.

What to Bring: Please bring a mat, two (2) yoga blocks, a water bottle, and dress in comfortable clothes.

About the Instructor: In a traditional Hatha Yoga practice, you warm up the body through the isolation of joints and then hold postures for 1-3 minutes. This makes Hatha Yoga incredibly versatile, which is why I chose this asana practice to restore the mobility in my hips after suffering from 3 pelvic breaks in a car wreck. I was wheelchair-bound for multiple months and lost nearly all of my muscle mass, as well as most of my flexibility. After emerging from physical therapy, I knew I still had a lot of work to do!

These Hatha for Hip Mobility classes were designed by me to create flexibility and strength, two very important components of mobility, to get myself back to a healthy baseline. When I found myself back in a great place physically, I realized how useful these classes could be for others as well. I hope to continue to share this practice with my ever-growing community!
