About the Program: Join us for an Artist Reception with Wendell Combest, a retired pharmacology professor whose exhibit, Experiments in Natural Color: Textile Dyeing with Plants and Iron Oxides, explores the intersection of art and science. Using techniques such as natural plant dyes, indigo vats, and cyanotype processes, his work blends scientific curiosity with striking visual expression, transforming fibers into richly patterned, color-filled compositions.
Take this opportunity to view the exhibit and hear Wendell discuss his work—from his creative process to the science behind his art—in a talk beginning at 2:30 PM. Complimentary refreshments will be provided.
About the Artist: Wendell Combest, Ph.D., has taught hands-on workshops on the formulation of botanical medicines from plants at Shenandoah University School of Pharmacy and summers at the University of Vermont. Following his retirement, he has re-focused his interests to understanding how the vibrant colors found in plants can be extracted and used as natural dyes on textiles. He has studied natural dyeing in various workshops at the Maiwa School of Textiles in Vancouver, BC, and Botanical Colors in Seattle, WA.
Date & Time: Sunday, April 19, 2026. The reception will begin at 2:00 and conclude by 3:30 PM, with a brief presentation by the artist beginning at 2:30 PM. Visitors are welcome to come and go as time allows.
