Joan & Joni

  • Barns of Rose Hill 95 Chalmers Court Berryville, VA, 22611 United States (map)

About: Joan & Joni is a heartfelt tribute to the music and legacy of Joan Baez and Joni Mitchell, brought to life by singer-songwriters Allison Shapira and Kipyn Martin. Allison, a “recovering opera singer,” discovered her true musical voice through folk, while Kipyn, an award-winning Americana artist, draws inspiration from her roots on the banks of the Shenandoah River.

Together, Allison and Kipyn perform a rich mix of well-known classics and hidden gems from Joan and Joni’s catalogs, highlighting the profound influence these folk icons have had on their own artistic journeys. The duo first connected at the Northeast Regional Folk Alliance (NERFA) conference in 2013, bonding over their shared classical training and passion for the folk revival sound of the 1960s.

Allison studied classical voice at Boston University, Tanglewood, and in Italy, but her earliest musical memories are steeped in the folk music of Joan Baez, Bob Dylan, and Judy Collins. In 2011, alongside a career in diplomacy and communications, she began writing and performing her own songs. Her debut album, Coming Home, was recorded and released at the legendary Club Passim—once known as Club 47—where Joan Baez launched her career in 1958.

West Virginia native Kipyn Martin now calls Maryland home. She’s been recognized as New Artist of the Year by the Washington Area Music Association and is a multiple Gold Award winner in the Mid-Atlantic Song Contest. Holding a Master of Music from Shenandoah Conservatory, Kipyn has released two acclaimed solo albums, Undercover Muse and Dance Across the Sky.

Joan & Joni made their debut in January 2015 to a sold-out crowd in Washington, D.C., and released their Joan & Joni EP featuring beloved tracks like “Morning Morgantown,” “Lily of the West,” “A Case of You,” “Diamonds and Rust,” and “The Circle Game.” Since then, they’ve performed over 75 shows from New England to Florida, including appearances at the historic Caffe Lena, Rockwood Music Hall, and the Woodstock Folk Festival.
